King size pocket sprung mattresses
A king size pocket sprung mattress is 150 x 200 cm (5ft x 6ft6), with springs that move independently so each of you gets 75 cm of responsive support. Air moves through the springs, and many arrive flat, wrapped and ready to use.

Is a pocket sprung king size mattress good for couples?
A pocket sprung king suits most couples: each person gets 75 cm of width, and because every spring moves on its own, each side responds to the person lying on it rather than to the whole bed.
Two people make more heat than one, and air moves through the springs, so a pocket sprung king usually sleeps cooler than an all-foam one. Many have firmer edges too, which gives you a steady place to sit and helps stop the side dipping when one of you sleeps near it. At 200 cm long, a king also suits sleepers up to about 185 to 190 cm tall.
Pocket springs do pass on a little more movement than memory foam. If that's what wakes you, compare our king size memory foam mattresses.
How many springs should a king size mattress have?
No set number of springs makes a king size mattress good, but kings are one of the sizes spring counts are most often quoted for, so on a king a figure such as 1000 is more likely to describe the mattress you're actually buying.
Even so, compare more than the number. More springs in the same space means each one is narrower, and very high counts such as 2000 often include a second layer of small springs near the surface, so two mattresses with the same figure can be built quite differently. Wire gauge matters as well: thicker wire feels firmer, and a lower gauge number means thicker wire. The comfort layers and fillings above the springs decide how the surface feels. See pocket sprung mattresses in every size.
Pocket sprung or memory foam for a king size?
For a king size bed, pocket springs suit couples who run warm, sit on the bed a lot or like a springy, responsive feel, while memory foam suits light sleepers who are woken by movement.
| On a king | Pocket sprung | Memory foam |
|---|---|---|
| Partner movement | Little; each spring moves on its own | Very little |
| Heat | Air moves through the springs | Can feel warmer |
| Edges | Often firmer, steady to sit on | Tend to give more |
| Feel | Springy, easy to change position | Moulds to you, slower to move on |
| Moving it | Heavy; many arrive flat | Usually rolled and boxed |
A hybrid puts a foam comfort layer over pocket springs, for couples who want some of each.
Are pocket sprung king size mattresses heavy?
Pocket sprung king size mattresses are heavy, because a 150 x 200 cm mattress holds a lot of steel springs, and many can't be rolled, so they're delivered flat and wrapped. A flat king needs no time to recover, but it's a two-person carry.
Before you order a flat one, measure the route to the bedroom: the narrowest doorway, the landing and the tightest turn on the stairs. If the route is tight, choose a king that arrives rolled; each mattress page says which. Most of our mattresses can be delivered the next working day; read delivery and returns before you order. The weight matters again whenever you rotate the mattress, so make that a two-person job as well.
Is a pocket sprung king good for heavier people?
A pocket sprung king is a sound choice for heavier sleepers, who usually need firmer support, a deeper mattress, a strong spring unit and firm edges, and a well-built pocket sprung king can offer all four.
For two heavier sleepers, think about your combined weight, choose a deep mattress of 25 cm or more, and look for medium-firm or firmer. Firm edges count for more here, because the side of the mattress takes your full weight every time you sit down to get in or out. A king also gives each of you 7.5 cm more width than a double. Check any maximum weight guidance on the product page, and see our mattresses for heavier people for more choice.

Is a 1000 pocket sprung king size mattress good?
A 1000 pocket sprung king size mattress can be a good choice, and because counts are often quoted at king size, the figure may well describe that king. Still, more springs isn't automatically better: wire gauge, comfort layers and fillings decide how it feels, so compare those as well as the number.
What does 2000 pocket sprung mean?
A 2000 pocket sprung label means the maker counts about 2,000 springs in one size, often a king. Very high counts often come from a second layer of small springs near the surface, so compare the main spring unit, the wire gauge and the comfort layers rather than the total alone.
Can a pocket sprung king size mattress be rolled?
Many pocket sprung king size mattresses can't be rolled, so they're delivered flat and wrapped; others are made to roll into a box. The mattress page tells you which. A rolled king needs a few hours before you sleep on it and 24 to 72 hours to reach full shape, whereas a flat one can be used as soon as it's unwrapped.
How do I get a flat king mattress up the stairs?
A flat king mattress is 150 x 200 cm, so measure the narrowest doorway, the landing and the tightest turn on the stairs before you order. Plan on two people to carry it, turned on its side through doorways. If the route is too tight, choose a king that arrives rolled and boxed instead.
Do pocket sprung king mattresses need turning?
A pocket sprung king mattress should be rotated head to toe every few weeks for the first three months, then every three months, so two sleepers wear it evenly. Turning it over is only for two-sided mattresses, so check what the maker says. At this size it's heavy, so rotate it with two people.
King or super king: which pocket sprung size should I choose?
Choose a pocket sprung super king if you want 90 cm each, the same width as a single bed, and your room allows it; a king gives 75 cm each. Both are 200 cm long. A flat super king is 180 cm wide, so check the route to the bedroom even more carefully.
What firmness pocket sprung king suits a couple?
A medium to medium-firm pocket sprung king suits many couples: side sleepers sink in enough at the shoulder and hip on medium, and back sleepers stay supported on medium-firm. Front sleepers and heavier sleepers usually need firmer. Every mattress page rates firmness on the same 1 to 10 scale, so you can compare.
