European double mattresses

A 140 x 200 cm mattress is a European double (4ft7 x 6ft6): 5 cm wider and 10 cm longer than a UK double. It fits many European and flat-pack double beds and gives two people 70 cm of width each.

How big is a 140 x 200 mattress?

A 140 x 200 mattress is a European double: 140 cm wide and 200 cm long, or 4ft7 x 6ft6. That's 5 cm wider and 10 cm longer than a UK double (135 x 190 cm), and 10 cm narrower than a UK king (150 x 200 cm).

Size Centimetres Feet Width each for two
UK double 135 x 190 cm 4ft6 x 6ft3 67.5 cm
European double 140 x 200 cm 4ft7 x 6ft6 70 cm
UK king 150 x 200 cm 5ft x 6ft6 75 cm
European king 160 x 200 cm 5ft3 x 6ft6 80 cm

Sometimes sold as a euro double, 140 x 200 cm is the size many European and flat-pack double beds are built around, including plenty of IKEA doubles. Not every IKEA bed is a European size, though, so measure inside the frame: 140 cm across and 200 cm long means this is your size.

Will a UK double mattress fit a European double bed?

A UK double mattress won't fill a European double bed: in a 140 x 200 cm frame it's 5 cm short across and 10 cm short in length.

Those gaps let the mattress slide around inside the frame, and sheets and pillows slip down them. If a UK double you already have leaves a strip of bare slats down one side and at the foot, those are the 5 cm and 10 cm gaps, and your frame is a 140 x 200. A 140 x 200 cm mattress won't fit a UK double frame either: it's 5 cm too wide and 10 cm too long, so it won't lie flat. If your bed turns out to be a UK double, our UK double mattresses are made for 135 x 190 cm frames.

Is a 140 x 200 mattress a king size?

No, a 140 x 200 mattress is a European double, not a king. A UK king is 150 x 200 cm, 10 cm wider, and a European king is 160 x 200 cm, 20 cm wider.

The confusion is understandable, because 140 x 200 cm is the same length as a UK king and wider than a UK double. But a UK king mattress won't go into a 140 cm frame, and a 140 x 200 cm mattress in a UK king frame leaves a 10 cm gap across. If you're choosing a new bed rather than filling an old one, a UK king size mattress gives 75 cm each and a European king (160 x 200 cm) gives 80 cm each.

Is a European double big enough for two?

A European double gives two people 70 cm each, 2.5 cm more than a UK double and exactly the width of a toddler's cot bed mattress.

For many couples that's enough, and the 200 cm length suits people up to about 185 to 190 cm tall, against about 175 to 180 cm on a UK double. If you both like room to spread out, though, the extra width of a king will make more difference than the extra length.

On a shared bed, the build matters as well. Pocket sprung mattresses and memory foam mattresses both pass on less movement than open coil, so you're less likely to feel each other turn over. If you each like a different feel, medium is the usual middle ground, and every mattress page shows its firmness on our 1 to 10 scale.

What bedding fits a 140 x 200 mattress?

A 140 x 200 mattress needs fitted sheets and a protector made for 140 x 200 cm. A UK double sheet is too small both ways, and a UK king sheet is 10 cm too wide.

Duvets are simpler: a UK double duvet (200 x 200 cm) fits, and a king duvet (225 x 220 cm) gives two people more to share. Check that the fitted sheet's pocket is deeper than your mattress.

A rolled 140 x 200 mattress is far easier to carry up a narrow staircase than a flat one, and each mattress page says which way it arrives. For the other sizes in the same system, see our guide to European size mattresses. For anything stranger, our odd size mattresses page shows how to measure a frame properly.

What size is a European double mattress?

A European double mattress is 140 x 200 cm, or 4ft7 x 6ft6. It's 5 cm wider and 10 cm longer than a UK double (135 x 190 cm), so the two sizes aren't interchangeable. Measure the inside of your frame to see which one you have.

Is a European double bigger than a UK double?

Yes, a European double (140 x 200 cm) is 5 cm wider and 10 cm longer than a UK double (135 x 190 cm). Shared by two, that's 70 cm each instead of 67.5 cm, and the extra length suits sleepers up to about 185 to 190 cm tall.

Can I put a 140 x 200 mattress on a UK double bed?

A 140 x 200 mattress won't fit a UK double bed. It's 5 cm wider and 10 cm longer than the 135 x 190 cm frame, so it won't lie flat inside it, and on a divan it overhangs. A UK double frame needs a 135 x 190 cm mattress.

Are IKEA double beds 140 x 200?

Many IKEA double beds take a 140 x 200 cm mattress, but not every IKEA bed is a European size. Measure the inside of the frame before ordering: if it's 140 cm wide and 200 cm long, a European double is the right mattress, whoever made the bed.

What size duvet do I need for a 140 x 200 bed?

A UK double duvet (200 x 200 cm) fits a 140 x 200 bed, with a good overhang on each side. A king duvet (225 x 220 cm) gives a couple more to share. Duvets don't need to match the mattress exactly; fitted sheets do, so buy those in 140 x 200 cm.

Is a 140 x 200 mattress good for a tall couple?

A 140 x 200 mattress suits a tall couple better than a UK double, because its 200 cm length suits sleepers up to about 185 to 190 cm. Width is the limit: each person gets 70 cm. Tall couples who also want more room can move up to 160 x 200 cm, which gives 80 cm each.

How deep should a 140 x 200 mattress be?

A standard depth of about 18 to 25 cm suits a 140 x 200 mattress on an ordinary bed frame. Deeper mattresses, 25 cm and over, usually have more comfort layers, and heavier sleepers often need the extra depth. Whatever you choose, the fitted sheet's pocket must be deeper than the mattress.

How much room do I need for a 140 x 200 bed?

For a 140 x 200 bed, allow the width of the frame plus around 60 to 70 cm on each side you need to walk past. The frame is usually a little bigger than the 140 x 200 cm mattress, so measure the frame itself before you plan the room.
