King size memory foam mattresses
A king size memory foam mattress is 150 x 200 cm (5ft x 6ft6), giving two sleepers 75 cm each, and memory foam passes very little movement between them. It usually arrives rolled and boxed, which makes a king far easier to get upstairs.

Is a king size memory foam mattress good for couples?
A king size memory foam mattress suits couples well: it gives each person 75 cm, 7.5 cm more than a double, and memory foam passes on very little movement, so one of you can turn over or get up without waking the other.
The pairing works best for light sleepers, couples with different bedtimes or shift patterns, and beds that a small child sometimes climbs into. A king is also 10 cm longer than a double, and because a mattress should be 10 to 15 cm longer than the tallest person on it, a 200 cm king suits sleepers up to about 185 to 190 cm tall.
Memory foam is quiet too, which helps when one of you is up before dawn. The trade-off is that it's slower to move on, so if you change position a lot through the night, you may prefer something springier.
Can a king size memory foam mattress be delivered rolled?
King size memory foam mattresses usually arrive rolled: compressed, vacuum packed and boxed, so a 150 x 200 cm mattress can go up a narrow staircase. That makes a real difference at this size, because a flat king is hard to turn on a tight landing.
The box is still heavy, so plan on two people to carry it, and take it to the bedroom before you open it: once a king expands, it's awkward to move. Expect to sleep on it after a few hours and to see its full shape within 24 to 72 hours; opening a window helps the faint new smell fade. Every mattress page shows whether it comes rolled or flat, and most of our mattresses can be delivered the next working day. Our rolled mattresses and delivery details explain more.
Is memory foam hot in a king size?
Memory foam can feel warmer than springs in any size, because it softens with body heat and fits closely around you, but a king gives a couple 75 cm each, so you can lie further apart than on a double.
If one of you still runs hot, a hybrid keeps a foam comfort layer but adds pocket springs underneath for airflow, and a pocket sprung king lets air move through the whole mattress. Keeping the bedroom at around 16 to 18°C, as The Sleep Charity suggests, helps too.
Memory foam or pocket sprung for a king size bed?
For a king size bed, choose memory foam if partner movement is what wakes you, and pocket springs if you run warm, often sit on the edge of the bed, or want a springier feel.
| Your situation | Usually the better choice |
|---|---|
| Light sleeper with a restless partner | Memory foam king |
| Different bedtimes or shift work | Memory foam king |
| One or both of you run hot | Hybrid or pocket sprung king |
| You often sit on the side of the bed | Pocket sprung king, for a firmer edge |
| One of you is much heavier | Deep, firmer memory foam, or pocket sprung |
On a king, edges are easy to overlook: all-foam mattresses tend to give more at the side than sprung ones, which matters if one of you sleeps near the edge or sits there to dress. A hybrid is the usual middle ground when one of you likes the hug of memory foam and the other prefers springs. Read more about how memory foam mattresses feel and wear.
How deep should a king size memory foam mattress be?
A king size memory foam mattress for two adults is usually standard depth, about 18 to 25 cm; heavier sleepers tend to do better on a deep one, 25 cm and over, with more foam between them and the base.
Look at how deep the memory foam layer is as well as the overall depth: the memory foam moulds, while the firmer layer beneath it supports. Check the bed base too, because slats should be no further apart than the mattress maker recommends, and fitted sheets need a pocket deeper than the mattress.

How long does a king size memory foam mattress take to expand?
A rolled king size memory foam mattress can usually be slept on a few hours after unboxing and reaches its full shape within 24 to 72 hours. Unbox it soon after delivery, on the bed frame if you can, and air the room, because any faint new smell fades with airing.
Is a king size memory foam mattress much bigger than a double?
A king size memory foam mattress is 150 x 200 cm, 15 cm wider and 10 cm longer than a 135 x 190 cm double. Shared by two, that's 75 cm each instead of 67.5 cm. Leave around 60 to 70 cm around the bed so you can both get in and out comfortably.
Will a UK king memory foam mattress fit a European king bed?
A UK king memory foam mattress won't fill a European king bed. The UK king is 150 x 200 cm and the European king is 160 x 200 cm, so it would leave a 10 cm gap across, and a European king mattress won't go into a UK frame. Measure the inside of the frame before ordering.
Does a memory foam king have good edge support?
A memory foam king usually has softer edges than a pocket sprung king, because foam compresses where you sit. If you sit on the side of the bed to dress, or one of you sleeps right at the edge, a pocket sprung or hybrid king will usually feel steadier there.
Is a memory foam king good for a heavier couple?
A memory foam king can suit heavier sleepers if it's deep, 25 cm and over, and medium-firm or firmer, because soft all-foam mattresses can sink too far under more weight. Think about your combined weight, check any weight guidance on the product page, and compare a pocket sprung king with a strong spring unit.
What bedding fits a king size memory foam mattress?
A king size memory foam mattress takes king fitted sheets, made for 150 x 200 cm, with a pocket deeper than the mattress. A king duvet is 225 x 220 cm. Take care with bedding bought abroad: a European king is 160 x 200 cm, and an American king is about 193 x 203 cm.
Is memory foam good for side sleepers in a king?
Memory foam suits side sleepers in a king, because it lets the shoulder and hip sink in so the spine stays roughly straight; side sleepers usually like medium-soft to medium. If your partner sleeps on their back, a medium mattress is a fair middle ground, and 75 cm each gives you both room to turn.
