What is a memory foam mattress?

A memory foam mattress has a comfort layer of polyurethane foam that softens with body heat, moulds to your shape and recovers slowly once you move. The material was developed in the 1960s from NASA-funded research.

In most memory foam mattresses, the memory foam sits on a firmer base that does the supporting: reflex foam in an all-foam mattress, or pocket springs in a memory foam hybrid. The memory foam decides how the surface feels; the base decides how well it holds you up. Because the foam reacts to warmth, it can feel firmer in a cold bedroom and softer once it has warmed up beneath you. Memory foam mattresses usually arrive rolled and boxed, which makes them easy to carry up narrow stairs.

What does memory foam feel like?

Memory foam feels as if you're sinking slowly into the mattress rather than lying on top of it: the foam gives most where you press hardest, at the shoulders and hips, and fills in around the waist.

That close fit is what people mean by pressure relief. When you turn over, the hollow you leave takes a few seconds to fill back in, which some people find comforting and others find makes moving feel like hard work. The foam soaks up movement instead of bouncing it across the bed, so you're less likely to feel a partner turn over or get up in the night, and it's quiet.

Who is a memory foam mattress best for?

A memory foam mattress suits side sleepers, light sleepers and couples who go to bed at different times, because it cushions the shoulders and hips and passes on very little movement. It suits hot sleepers and front sleepers less well.

If you Is memory foam a good fit?
Sleep on your side Yes. Your shoulders and hips sink in, so choose medium-soft to medium.
Share a bed with a restless partner Yes. Very little movement crosses the mattress.
Sleep on your back Usually, at medium to medium-firm.
Sleep on your front Often not. Your hips can sink and arch your lower back, so a firmer sprung mattress usually suits better.
Run hot at night Not always. Memory foam can feel warm, and springs let more air through.

For children, a supportive memory foam mattress is fine, usually at medium to medium-firm. Babies under 12 months need something else entirely: the Lullaby Trust advises a firm, flat, waterproof cot mattress, so memory foam isn't suitable. If you sleep on your side, see mattresses for side sleepers for more on choosing the right firmness.

Are memory foam mattresses hot?

Memory foam mattresses can feel warmer than sprung mattresses, because the foam fits closely around your body and leaves little room for air to move.

How warm depends on the build. A memory foam layer over pocket springs usually feels cooler than all-foam, because air moves through the springs, and that's one reason people choose a memory foam hybrid. Gel-infused and open-cell memory foams are made to hold less heat, and a breathable cover helps. So does the room: The Sleep Charity suggests aiming for around 16 to 18°C. If you always wake up warm, see cooling mattresses for what else makes a difference.

What should I check before buying a memory foam mattress?

Before buying a memory foam mattress, check how deep the memory foam layer is, what sits underneath it and its firmness number, because two mattresses sold as memory foam can feel completely different.

  • The memory foam layer: a thin layer over a firm base feels mostly firm, while a deeper layer gives more of the slow, sinking feel. Where the maker gives a density, denser foam tends to keep its shape for longer.
  • The base: reflex foam keeps the mattress light and quiet, while pocket springs add bounce and airflow.
  • Firmness: brands don't share a firmness scale, so compare within one shop. Every mattress page here shows a number from 1 to 10.
  • Depth: a standard mattress is about 18 to 25 cm deep. On a bunk bed or high sleeper, choose one that sits at or below the maximum mattress line marked on the frame.

Memory foam or pocket sprung: which is better?

Neither memory foam nor pocket sprung is better for everyone. Memory foam suits side sleepers and light sleepers who want a close, hugging feel and very little movement from a partner. Pocket springs suit people who sleep warm, like a bouncier surface or need firmer support. A memory foam hybrid puts the two together.

Is a memory foam mattress good for back pain?

Memory foam isn't a treatment for back pain, and no type of mattress is. A 2003 trial published in The Lancet compared firmness rather than materials, and found people with chronic lower back pain did better on a medium-firm mattress than a firm one. Anyone with ongoing back pain should see a GP or physiotherapist.

Is a memory foam mattress good for a child?

Memory foam is fine for most children if the mattress is supportive enough that they don't sink too far, which usually means medium to medium-firm. Memory foam is not suitable for babies under 12 months: the Lullaby Trust advises a firm, flat, waterproof cot mattress that fits the cot snugly.

Why does my new memory foam mattress smell?

A new memory foam mattress often has a faint smell when it's first unpacked, because new foam has a smell of its own and vacuum packing holds it in until the box is opened. Unbox the mattress soon after delivery, open a window and leave the bedding off for a few hours. The smell fades with airing.

How long does a memory foam mattress last?

A memory foam mattress usually lasts around 7 to 10 years, the typical span for an adult mattress, and denser memory foam tends to hold its shape for longer. Rotating a memory foam mattress head to toe every so often spreads the wear. Replace a memory foam mattress sooner if it sags, develops lumps or you start waking up stiff.

Can a memory foam mattress go on a slatted base?

A memory foam mattress can go on a slatted base, as long as the slats are no further apart than the mattress maker recommends, because foam can dip into wide gaps. Memory foam also works on an adjustable bed, since it bends with the base. Avoid putting it straight on the floor, where moisture can get trapped and cause mould.

How long does a memory foam mattress take to expand?

A rolled memory foam mattress is usually ready to sleep on a few hours after unboxing and reaches its full shape within 24 to 72 hours. Memory foam reacts to warmth, so it may take a little longer in a cold room. Unbox the mattress soon after delivery rather than leaving it in the box.

Can couples share a memory foam mattress?

Couples can share a memory foam mattress happily, and it suits many because very little movement crosses the foam, so one person turning over or getting up is less likely to wake the other. If one of you runs hot or prefers a firmer, springier feel, a memory foam hybrid may suit you both better.
