European small double mattresses

A 120 x 200 cm mattress is a European small double (4ft x 6ft6): the same width as a UK small double and 10 cm longer. It fits beds built to European sizes and suits one adult or a tall teenager.

What is a 120 x 200 mattress?

A 120 x 200 mattress is a European small double: 120 cm wide and 200 cm long, or 4ft x 6ft6. It's the same width as a UK small double (120 x 190 cm) but 10 cm longer, so the two aren't interchangeable.

Size Centimetres Compared with 120 x 200 cm
European single 90 x 200 cm 30 cm narrower
UK small double 120 x 190 cm Same width, 10 cm shorter
European small double 120 x 200 cm This size
UK double 135 x 190 cm 15 cm wider, 10 cm shorter
European double 140 x 200 cm 20 cm wider

You'll mostly find 120 x 200 cm, sometimes listed as a euro small double, on beds from European brands, including some teenage and guest beds. The name is where mix-ups start, because a bed sold as a small double could be either size. Measure the length inside the frame: if it's 190 cm, you need a UK small double mattress instead.

Will a UK small double fit a 120 x 200 bed?

A UK small double fits the width of a 120 x 200 bed but not the length: at 190 cm long, it leaves 10 cm of empty frame at one end.

That space lets the mattress slide about, and pillows and bedding end up down the gap. If the mattress you have now keeps creeping and leaves bare slats at one end, measure the frame: it may well be a 120 x 200. On a teenager's high sleeper or any child's bed, a gap is a safety issue as well, so match the frame exactly. Going the other way, a 120 x 200 cm mattress is 10 cm too long for a UK small double frame and won't lie flat inside it.

Who is a 120 x 200 mattress good for?

A 120 x 200 mattress is good for one adult who wants more room than a single, and for tall teenagers moving up from a single bed. It's 30 cm wider than a single and long enough for people up to about 185 to 190 cm tall.

That height comes from a simple rule: a mattress should be about 10 to 15 cm longer than the tallest person sleeping on it. A UK small double, at 190 cm, suits people up to about 175 to 180 cm, so a teenager who's shooting up gets more room to grow on a 120 x 200. Our teen mattresses page has more on firmness and support at that age.

It also makes a roomy guest bed for a smaller spare room. Leave around 60 to 70 cm beside the bed on any side you need to walk past.

Can two people sleep on a 120 x 200 mattress?

Two people can sleep on a 120 x 200 mattress for the odd night, but each gets 60 cm of width, 10 cm less than a toddler's cot bed mattress.

The extra length helps tall guests but adds no width. Even a UK double (135 x 190 cm) gives 67.5 cm each, though it's 10 cm shorter. For two people every night, a European double mattress (140 x 200 cm) gives 70 cm each, and a European king (160 x 200 cm) gives 80 cm each.

What sheets fit a 120 x 200 mattress?

A 120 x 200 mattress needs fitted sheets and a mattress protector made for 120 x 200 cm. UK small double sheets are cut for 190 cm and will be 10 cm short.

For the duvet, a standard UK double (200 x 200 cm) is the usual choice on a small double bed of either kind, with a good overhang each side. Whatever sheets you choose, the pocket needs to be deeper than the mattress.

What size is a European small double mattress in feet?

A European small double mattress is 4ft x 6ft6 in feet, or 120 x 200 cm. It has the same 4ft width as a UK small double (4ft x 6ft3) but is 10 cm longer. Feet are only a rough guide for beds designed in centimetres, so measure your frame in centimetres before ordering.

Is 120 x 200 the same as a small double?

A 120 x 200 cm mattress is a small double in European sizes, but it isn't the same as a UK small double. Both are 120 cm wide; the UK one is 190 cm long and the European one 200 cm, so each fits only its own frame properly.

Can I put a 120 x 200 mattress on a UK small double bed?

A 120 x 200 mattress won't fit a UK small double bed, because it's 10 cm longer than the 190 cm frame. It won't lie flat inside a framed bed, and on a divan it will hang over the end. For a UK small double, buy a 120 x 190 cm mattress.

Is a 120 x 200 mattress good for a teenager?

A 120 x 200 mattress suits many teenagers, especially tall ones. It gives 30 cm more width than a single, and at 200 cm long it suits sleepers up to about 185 to 190 cm. For a growing teenager, medium to medium-firm support usually works well.

What duvet size fits a 120 x 200 bed?

A UK double duvet (200 x 200 cm) fits a 120 x 200 bed, with an overhang on each side. A single duvet (135 x 200 cm) would leave very little overhang on a bed this wide. Fitted sheets are different: they need to be made for 120 x 200 cm.

How deep should a 120 x 200 mattress be?

For an ordinary bed frame, a standard depth of about 18 to 25 cm suits a 120 x 200 mattress. On a raised bed, the mattress must sit at or below the maximum mattress line, which usually means a slimmer one. Either way, choose fitted sheets with a pocket deeper than the mattress.

Which type of 120 x 200 mattress should I choose?

Choose a 120 x 200 mattress by how you sleep. Side sleepers usually suit medium-soft to medium, often memory foam or a hybrid; back sleepers medium to medium-firm; front sleepers medium-firm to firm. Pocket springs let air move through, which helps if you sleep warm.
