Double pocket sprung mattresses
A double pocket sprung mattress is 135 x 190 cm (4ft6 x 6ft3), with springs that move independently so each side responds to its own sleeper. Air moves through the springs, which suits couples who run warm; many arrive flat, some rolled.

Is a pocket sprung double mattress good for couples?
A pocket sprung double suits most couples, because each spring sits in its own fabric pocket and moves on its own, so each side responds to the person lying on it and less movement crosses the bed than on an open coil mattress.
That independence counts on a double, where each of you has 67.5 cm, narrower than a 70 cm cot bed mattress. The springs also leave room for air to move, which helps when two people share the heat of one bed. Many pocket sprung doubles have firmer edges than all-foam ones, so the side stays steady when you sit on it or sleep close to it.
- Suits: couples who run warm, heavier sleepers, and anyone who sits on the side of the bed to dress.
- Think twice: a very light sleeper with a restless partner, or stairs too tight for a flat mattress 135 cm wide.
Pocket springs do pass on more movement than memory foam. If one of you wakes whenever the other turns over, compare our double memory foam mattresses.
How many springs should a pocket sprung double have?
No set number of springs makes a pocket sprung double good: counts are quoted for one size, often a double or king, and if the figure is for a king, the double in that range has fewer springs because it's 15 cm narrower and 10 cm shorter.
So a 1000 pocket sprung double may not hold 1,000 springs. The count is only one measure anyway. More springs in the same space means each spring is narrower, but how the mattress feels also depends on these:
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Which size the count is for | A count quoted for a king overstates what's in a double |
| Wire gauge | Thicker wire feels firmer; a lower gauge number means thicker wire |
| Comfort layers and fillings | They set how soft the surface feels |
| Edges | Firm edges stop the side dipping when you sit or lie near it |
Pocket sprung or memory foam for a double bed?
Choose a pocket sprung double if either of you runs warm, prefers a springier surface or is on the heavier side; choose memory foam if partner movement is what wakes you, or the mattress has to go up narrow stairs rolled.
- Pocket sprung double: cooler, springier and easier to change position on, often firmer at the edges, but heavier, and many arrive flat.
- Memory foam double: moulds to each of you and passes on very little movement, but can feel warmer and is slower to move on.
- Hybrid: pocket springs underneath with a foam layer on top, for couples who want some of each.
Whichever you choose, check the firmness: medium to medium-firm suits many couples sharing a double, and every mattress page rates it from 1 to 10. If heat is the main problem for one of you, see our cooling mattresses too.
Can a pocket sprung double mattress be rolled?
Some pocket sprung doubles are made to be rolled, compressed and boxed, but many can't be, so they arrive flat and wrapped, ready to use the moment the wrapping comes off. Each mattress page says which.
A flat double is 135 x 190 cm and heavy, so check the route before you order: the tightest turn on the stairs, the landing and the bedroom door. If the route is tight, choose one that arrives rolled; it can be slept on after a few hours and reaches full shape within 24 to 72 hours. Most of our mattresses can be delivered the next working day, and delivery and returns has the details.
Do I need to turn a pocket sprung double?
A pocket sprung double should be rotated head to toe every few weeks for the first three months, then every three months; only flip it if the maker says it's two-sided.
On a double, two people lie in the same two places every night, so rotating spreads that wear across the springs and fillings. Replace a double that sags, has lumps or lets you feel the springs; an adult mattress typically lasts around 7 to 10 years.

Is a 1000 pocket sprung mattress good?
A 1000 pocket sprung mattress can be a good one, but the number alone doesn't prove it. The figure is the spring count for one size, often a double or king, so a 1000 pocket sprung double may hold fewer. Wire gauge, comfort layers and fillings shape the feel too, and more springs isn't automatically better.
Do pocket sprung doubles sleep cool?
A pocket sprung double usually sleeps cooler than a memory foam one, because air can move through the spaces around the springs. Natural fillings such as wool help regulate temperature too. If either of you runs hot, pair it with breathable bedding and a bedroom of around 16 to 18°C, as The Sleep Charity suggests.
Is a pocket sprung double good for heavier people?
A pocket sprung double suits many heavier sleepers, who usually need firmer support, a deeper mattress, a strong spring unit and firm edges. If two of you share, think about your combined weight, check any maximum weight guidance on the product page, and consider a king if you'd like more room.
Pocket sprung or open coil: which is better for a double?
For a double that two people share every night, pocket sprung is usually the better choice, because its springs move independently and less movement passes between you. Open coil springs are linked by wire, which makes the mattress bouncier, lighter and cheaper, so it suits a guest room double used now and then.
Can a pocket sprung double go on an adjustable bed?
Some pocket sprung doubles can go on an adjustable bed, but only if they bend easily, which usually means no stiff rods around the edge. Foam mattresses flex more readily. Check the adjustable bed maker's guidance, and ask us if a mattress page doesn't say whether it's suitable.
How deep should a pocket sprung double be?
A pocket sprung double for everyday use is usually standard depth, about 18 to 25 cm. Deep mattresses, 25 cm and over, usually have more comfort layers above the springs and suit heavier sleepers. Whatever the depth, buy fitted sheets with a pocket deeper than the mattress.
Is a pocket sprung double heavy to move?
A pocket sprung double is heavier than a foam double of a similar depth, because of the steel springs. A flat one is a two-person carry, and rotating it every three months is a two-person job too. If getting it upstairs is a worry, choose one that arrives rolled and boxed.
