What does British made mean for a mattress?

A British-made mattress is built in a factory in the UK. That covers the work that turns springs, foam and fabric into a finished mattress: making or assembling the spring unit, layering the fillings, and stitching the cover and edges.

It doesn't always mean every material started life here. Springs, foams and fabrics can come from the UK or from abroad, so if all-British materials matter to you, check the maker's description or ask us. Every mattress in this collection is made in the UK, and each one carries a Made in Britain badge on its page so you can spot it anywhere on the site.

Are British-made mattresses better?

Not automatically. How well a mattress supports you depends on its construction, materials and firmness, not the country it was made in. Every mattress sold in the UK has to meet the same fire safety standard, BS 7177, wherever it comes from.

What British made does give you is a shorter journey from the factory to your bedroom, makers who work to UK bed sizes, and money that supports manufacturing jobs here. For many people that's reason enough. It's also a sensible way to decide between two mattresses that suit you equally well.

Which types of mattress are made in Britain?

UK factories make all the main types: pocket sprung, open coil, memory foam and hybrid, from slim children's mattresses to deep ones for super kings. Pocket sprung mattresses with deep fillings often can't be rolled, so they arrive flat and fully wrapped, ready to use straight away. Foam and many hybrid mattresses arrive rolled and boxed, which makes them easy to carry up narrow stairs.

Buying for a child? Narrow the list to your bed size, then check the depth. A mattress for bunk beds and high sleepers has to sit at or below the maximum mattress line on the frame, which on many raised beds means 15 to 16 cm deep or less. For everyday single beds, our kids mattresses page explains sizes and firmness by age.

What should you check before you buy?

Where a mattress is made is one detail. These matter just as much, and every mattress page lists them.

What to check Why it matters
Size in centimetres Measure the inside of your bed frame. A UK single is 90 x 190 cm and a double is 135 x 190 cm.
Depth Bunk beds, high sleepers and trundle drawers limit how deep a mattress can be.
Firmness Rated 1 to 10 on every page. Side sleepers usually suit medium-soft to medium (3 to 6).
Fire safety Every mattress we sell meets BS 7177.
How it arrives Rolled and boxed, or flat and fully wrapped. The page tells you which.

Our size guide covers every UK and European size, including shorty and small single.

How can you tell where a mattress is made?

Start with the description. Makers who build in the UK usually say so, and on our site those mattresses carry the Made in Britain badge. If a listing doesn't say, ask the retailer before you buy. We're a small family business, so if you ask us where a mattress is made, you'll get a straight answer.

Do British-made mattresses cost more?

Sometimes, but not always. Price follows what goes into the mattress: the type of springs, the depth of the fillings and the cover. A slim British-made foam mattress for a bunk bed can cost less than a deep imported hybrid, so compare like with like, size for size and depth for depth.

Need one quickly? Most of our mattresses can be delivered the next working day, and our next day delivery mattresses are all in one place. The delivery and returns page has the details.

British-made mattresses: your questions answered

Can't see your question? Ask us and we'll get back to you.

Are British-made mattresses better than imported ones?

Not automatically. Comfort and support come from a mattress's construction, materials and firmness rather than where it was made. What British made does give you is a shorter journey from the factory to your home, makers who build to UK bed sizes, and support for UK manufacturing jobs.

Do all mattresses sold in the UK meet the same fire safety rules?

Yes. Every mattress sold in the UK has to meet the same fire safety rules, tested to BS 7177, wherever it was made. A British-made mattress isn't safer for that reason alone, but every mattress we sell meets the standard.

Does made in Britain mean all the materials are British?

Not necessarily. Made in Britain means the mattress was built in a UK factory. Springs, foams and fabrics can be sourced from the UK or abroad. If all-British materials matter to you, check the maker's description or ask us and we'll find out.

How do I know a mattress on your site is British made?

Look for the Made in Britain badge on the product card and the mattress page, where the specification lists it too. Every British-made mattress we sell also appears in this collection, so this page is the quickest way to see them all.

Can I get a British-made mattress for a bunk bed?

Yes, as long as one here fits your bed. Find the maximum mattress line on your bunk or high sleeper, then choose a mattress that's the same depth or less. On many raised beds that's about 15 to 16 cm, and every mattress page lists its depth.

How quickly can a British-made mattress be delivered?

Most of our mattresses, British made or not, can be delivered the next working day, Monday to Friday excluding bank holidays. Each mattress page shows its own delivery time and whether it arrives rolled and boxed or flat and fully wrapped.

Are British-made mattresses more expensive?

Not always. Price depends on what goes into a mattress: its springs, fillings, depth and cover. A slim foam mattress made in Britain can cost less than a deep imported hybrid, so compare mattresses of the same size, depth and type.

Why buy a mattress made in the UK?

People choose British made to support UK manufacturing, to get a mattress built to UK bed sizes, and because a shorter journey from the factory can mean less waiting. Pick the mattress that suits how you sleep first, then let where it's made decide between close options.
