Apart from that, a trundle mattress is an ordinary mattress, just thinner.

Standard mattresses are about 18 to 25 cm deep, so a spare single from another bed often won't fit. Trundles come in two main forms: a drawer on castors, and a low frame that pulls out from under the bed. The same limit applies to both: whatever sits on the trundle has to pass under the frame of the main bed.

How thick should a trundle mattress be?

A trundle mattress should be thin enough for the drawer to close without the mattress catching on the main bed, which on many trundles means around 10 to 15 cm. With a rolled mattress, wait before you test the fit: rolled mattresses are usable after a few hours but take 24 to 72 hours to reach full shape, so one that clears the frame on the first evening can be deeper a day or two later. Our thin mattresses range brings slim, low-profile mattresses together in one place.

What size is a trundle mattress?

A trundle mattress is usually a single, 90 x 190 cm (3ft x 6ft3), or a small single, 75 x 190 cm (2ft6 x 6ft3), but trundle drawers vary, so measure inside yours rather than assuming it matches the bed above.

In width and length, then, a trundle mattress is normally a standard size; depth is what sets it apart. Once you know the drawer's inside measurements, look at single mattresses or small single mattresses and check each mattress's depth against your clearance.

Which type of mattress is best for a trundle?

Trundle mattresses are usually lightweight foam or slim sprung builds, because both can be made thin enough for a drawer. Foam is lighter to lift out and air, and quiet; a slim sprung mattress lets more air through and feels springier.

Think about who will sleep on it. For children and occasional guests, a slim, supportive trundle mattress is usually comfortable enough. An adult sleeping on it every night will usually want more depth than a drawer allows. If you don't have a trundle at all, a folding mattress does a similar job for sleepovers and folds away into a cupboard afterwards.

Can I leave the mattress in the trundle drawer?

You can leave a mattress in a trundle drawer between uses, but pull the drawer out and air the mattress now and then, especially after someone has slept on it, because a closed drawer lets very little air reach it.

A sleeping body gives off warmth and moisture. In a drawer with a solid base, that moisture has nowhere to go, and a damp mattress can grow mould. A slatted base lets air reach the underside; with a solid one, lift the mattress out after a sleepover and stand it on its side for a while before you put it away.

Many day beds have a trundle underneath, and the day bed needs its own mattress too.
