The mattress shifts about, bedding drops into the gap, and on a child's bed or raised bed a gap is somewhere a hand or foot can get trapped. It doesn't work the other way round either: a European single or small double is 10 cm too long for its UK frame, a European double is 5 cm too wide as well, and a European king is 10 cm too wide for a UK king. The super king is the one size that swaps freely. On that rule, a 190 cm UK mattress suits people up to about 175 to 180 cm tall, and a 200 cm European one suits people up to about 185 to 190 cm.
